"Despite the Sustainable Development Goals being officially adopted in 2015, the real work begins in 2016 to ensure ideas become action, and hope becomes change. None of this will be easy. Global peace today requires our courage to overcome depleted resources, inaction, and apathy; it asks us to embrace our differences, and not allow fear and extremism to overshadow our compassion for one another. With this in mind, the theme of this year’s conference is “Courage for Peace, Compassion in Action.”
We hope that this theme informs your personal experience at the conference: it takes courage to speak up in committee, courage to disagree, and compassion to learn from fellow delegates. Yet, working together, you can collaborate, debate, and compromise to find actual solutions to actual problems. Your exchange of ideas and solutions to global issues will reflect the conscious effort people make every day to act courageously and compassionately for change. By doing this, you are empowering yourself and each other to transform our global community, and you are inspiring the global community with your ideas. " Kristina Getty Beatrice L. We took a team of 27 MacEwan students to New York City for the annual National Model United Nations this past April primarily representing Nigeria (as well as two members representing South Korea). Our team was incredibly successful at the conference winning 8 individual awards as well as being recognized as an Outstanding Delegation. We were able to visit the United Nations General Assembly, meet amazing young intellectuals from all over the world and create long-term bonds with one another. This year we aim to not only duplicate but surpass the success we had in 2016!
